NBC Sports anchor Bob Costas is facing criticism for his comments on gun control during Sunday Night Football's halftime show.
Many people are upset with Costas for giving his opinion on gun laws in a segment about a murder-suicide involving a Kansas City Chiefs player. Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend, then took his own life.
Costas used a segment to echo the comments of another columnist who criticized the gun culture in America.
"Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it," Costas quoted from a Jason Whitlock column.
The comments didn't sit well with Central Virginians, who were as upset with the comments, as they were about Costas addressing the issue during the halftime show. Reaction on the NBC12 Facebook page was strongly in opposition of Costas' commentary.
"I think Bob Costas is an idiot that was using another idiot's writings to push his own agenda and it was no time for that on national television," wrote Chris Anderson.
"I don't watch a football game to have a commentator tell me what he, or some other commentator he chose to quote, thinks on a political issue. Costas is entitled to his opinion, but halftime of a football game is not the time to express it," added David Adams.
"Yeah, cause you can't kill someone with a kitchen knife. SMH (shaking my head)," commented Doug Twiddy.
There were some who cheered Costas and others who supported his pro-gun control position, but they were in the minority. Costas hasn't commented any more on the controversy.
