Update: Police release names of suspect and victim in shooting at Hopewell VFW

HOPEWELL, VA (WWBT) -

A Petersburg man is in critical condition at VCU Medical Center following a shooting at a Hopewell VFW.

Police say a fight broke out at the VFW in the 200 Block of Winston Churchill Drive around 1:49 a.m. Sunday. Officers say during the altercation a passenger inside a vehicle was shot in the head and torso.

The victim, 23 year old Jacory Moore was transported to John Randolph Medical Center and then to VCU Medical Center. Officers on scene gave chase immediately after the shooting and apprehended the shooter at the scene.  

The alleged shooter has been identified as 20 year old Kentrell Butts of Hopewell.   Butts is charged with aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, reckless handling of a firearm, discharging a firearm in the city limits, and discharging a firearm in a public place.

He is currently being held at Riverside Regional Jail without bond.

The Hopewell Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or any possible altercations that may have occurred inside the VFW to contact detectives at 804-541-2284 or the police non-emergency line at 804-541-2222.
