Without Theus, VCU tops Belmont

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Despite missing starting point guard Darius Theus due to a knee injury, VCU opened up an 18 point first half lead and held on to top Belmont, 75-65.  The Rams improve to 5-3 on the season.

The Bruins (5-2) would chip away at VCU's lead throughout the second half and pull to within five points, but the Rams put together one final surge to seal the win.

Traveon Graham paced VCU with 19 points, while Juvonte Reddic added 17 points and nine rebounds.  Rob Brandenberg also hit double figures with 14 points, while Melvin Johnson chipped in eleven off the bench.  Belmont's Ian Clark had the game-high with 24 points on 10-of-10 shooting from the floor.

As for Theus, he had played in 111 of 112 games during his career at VCU.  Saturday marked just the second contest he was unable to play in and the first since his freshman season.

VCU now gets next week to prepare for rival Old Dominion, as the Rams travel to Norfolk on Friday to face the Monarchs.  Tip-off is set for 9:00pm.
