Two multi-vehicle accidents, one right after the other, closed all southbound lanes of I-95 just north of Bells Road in Richmond for over an hour early Saturday morning.
State Police officials say shortly after 2:30 a.m., a 2009 Toyota Sedan ran off the left side of the roadway striking a jersey wall. The Toyota came back into traffic and was struck by a 2009 Nissan.
Police say the driver of the Toyota, who may have been drinking, was not wearing his safety belt and was transported to VCU Medical Center with serious injuries. The driver of the Nissan was transported to Chippenham Medical Center with minor injuries.
No charges have been filed at this time in this accident.
Police say the second crash happened directly behind the first crash and it involved two vehicles and a passenger bus. Police say a driver of a 1998 Ford Explorer struck a 2011 Chevrolet Impala that then hit the passenger bus.
A passenger inside the Explorer and the driver and the three passengers inside the Impala all suffered minor injuries and were transported to the hospital. None of the 33 passengers on the bus were injured.
Both crashes remain under investigation.
