Vandals slash tires on 13 cars in Hopewell

HOPEWELL, VA (WWBT) -

Hopewell Police are looking for vandals who punctured the tires on at least 13 vehicles in the City Point neighborhood.

Police say the crime spree happened between the hours of 11:00 p.m. on November 29 and 8:00 a.m. on November 30.

It is not the first time vandals have hit the City Point service station.

"If I would have caught them I would be up there waiting to go to jail," said station owner David South, who, after 60 years, is finding it hard to fight off a nagging feeling.

"Like shutting my doors and closing it up and forgetting about it," said South. "It is getting to the point that I don't even want to be in business."

Investigators say vandals used a small tool and stabbed the tires on at least 13 cars up to 100 times. At least four of the customers at City Point Service Station are stuck with $100 repair bills.

"It is Christmas time. Times are tight," said Lt. Damon Stoker. "I would rather buy presents for my kids than a tire for my car."

Lt. Stoker is convinced this was no one-man operation.

"Our best guess is it may be several individuals," said Lt. Stoker. "We're hoping maybe one of those individuals told someone who may be willing to come forward and give us a good tip."

"That does surprise me. It shocks me." said Cheryl Painter, who lives just down from the service station.

Police are stationed at the corner of Cedar lane and Appomattox Street. They are looking for any suspicious activity.

"I hope it does not happen to me with four children." said Painter.

You can call it a community on edge after vandals take a straight edge to car tires.

"It's a shame you can't have anything anymore," said South. "Somebody is always trying to mess up something you got."

Hopewell Police are increasing patrols. If you have any information, call Crime Solvers at 541-2202.
