Hanover supervisors mull vehicle tax

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) -

It may cost you more to own a car in Hanover County. The Board of Supervisors are considering a vehicle tax.

On Wednesday, the board voted to remove cash proffers on new construction. Cash proffers are paid by developers to help the county pay for growth.

To make up for that lost cash, one idea is to have a vehicle tax.

The tax would cost the car owner ten dollars a year. From that, the county would take in about one million dollars a year. The money would go toward schools, roads and other capital improvements.

Supervisor Angela Kelly-Wicek said the tax won't equal what cash proffers gave the county.

Supervisor Sean Davis is against the vehicle tax and cash proffers. He voted for a reserve fund that includes money left over, after the county pays down its debt service.

"It will allow us more latitude to protect our schools and to provide for road maintenance," said Davis.

There will be a public hearing on the vehicle tax January 9.
