RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Holiday shopping is well underway and now your purchases could lower the price you pay for gas.
The "Fuel Rewards Network" just started in Metro Richmond. It's a rewards program for Shell stations. The more purchases you make at participating retailers, the lower your price per gallon.
You can pick up a card at participating stores or get one online with a preloaded discount. Setting up an account is absolutely free. To earn rewards, log into your FRN account and shop at the participating stores.
FRN's online mall has more than 700 retailers - like Macy's, Best Buy and Home Depot. For every $50 you spend, you'll get 5 cents off per gallon on one fill-up of up to 20 gallons. Some merchants offer five or 10 times rewards, multiplying the savings even faster.
If you like to eat out, make it work to your advantage. There are dozens of restaurants all over the Metro area participating in the fuel rewards network. You'll earn 10 cents off per gallon for every $50 spent. The interactive map on the site will show you which restaurants are near you.
The site will show exactly how much of a discount you have and what you bought to get it. Once you've racked up the savings, take your Fuel Reward Network card with you to any participating Shell station. Swipe the FRN card before you pay and the discount will be automatically applied before you pump.
As an added bonus, you'll get 3 cents off a gallon every time you fill up using your FRN card. Try to hold out until Thursdays when gas is discounted 5 cents a gallon all day.
The program is rolling out from market to market, so you can even use it when you travel. The program is active in Hampton Roads, Roanoke and the Washington D.C. area.
