Family speaks following murder of convenience store owner

The family of Mohammad Taib is looking for answers after the 59-year-old was murdered in his south Richmond convenience store Saturday.

Relatives also say Taib had been mugged several times over the years, but they say it was his passion for people that kept him in business for 17 years.

20-year-old Sheroz Khan says friends and family are keeping him strong through one of the toughest times of his life - the loss of his father.

"He was like my best friend," said Sheroz. "He loved us so much."

Sheroz says his father poured 15-hours a day into the Food Mart on Erich Road off Midlothian Turnpike.

Mohammad Taib was once a New York taxi cab driver and sea merchant. He spent the last 17-years growing his business but even more importantly he invested in his five children.

That all came to an end around 11:00 Saturday morning. Police received a call that someone had been shot inside the store.

When officers arrived they found Mr. Taib dead, behind the counter. Investigators believe he was robbed. Sheroz had just helped him in the store the day before and last saw him Friday night before bed.

"I hugged him and told him I loved him then I got the call the next morning," said Sheroz. "That was the last time I saw him."

The parking lot remains empty and the doors locked while loved ones mourn at Taib's home. Taib's cousin is still in disbelief. He says he lost his best friend over something so superficial.

"It's a big loss," said Khan. "For $400 or $500, we suffered a lot."

Sunday, police released surveillance video from outside of the store. The images were taken around the time of the murder. Taib's cousin says the cameras were installed a couple years ago following multiple robberies and a shooting that left his leg seriously injured.

"He was almost paralyzed from that," said Khan. "He could not walk properly for a year and a half."

No matter what he endured over the years, family says Taib was a hard worker who put his family and friends before himself.

"The best father I could ever ask for," said Sheroz.

The family plans on holding a funeral service early next week.

Police ask anyone who may have seen or heard something the day of the murder to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
