Richmond police investigate Food Mart murder

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Police are searching for the person who shot and killed a man during an attempted robbery at the Food Mart on Erich Road in South Richmond.

Police say a person found the body of 59 year old Mohammad Taib behind the counter.

"He's a nice guy. A very very nice guy, somebody kill him for nothing. For $500, for $600," said Whalid Khaldi, a frequent customer.

Khaldi says he knows the victim and frequently shops at the convenience store while cars from his taxi company are getting fixed at a nearby auto shop.

Khaldi says they spoke to each other in Arabic. Khaldi said he is from Jerusalem and says the victim came from Pakistan.

"He likes to talk. He joke and he's a nice guy. 'How ya doing brother', like this, always," said Khaldi.

Several business owners near the Food Mart off Midlothian Turnpike are from the Middle East and say they all know each other.

Khaldi said he is angry the shooter took a hard working man from his family.

Customers say the victim has a wife and children.

Police are not releasing the name of the victim at this time. They are also not releasing a suspect description because they say it is still early in the investigation.

If you know anything that could help police, call Crime Stopper at 780-1000.
