Homicide under investigation in South Richmond

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Right now, Richmond Police are searching for the person who gunned down a man during an attempted robbery.

Officers found his body behind the counter of the Food Mart on Erich Road around 11 a.m.

Cries of anguish and pain could be heard as friend and family gathered outside the Food Mart.

Police say a person found the man's body behind the counter.  Investigators believe he was shot to death during a robbery attempt in the middle of the day.

"He's a nice guy," says Walid Khaldi.  "A very nice guy somebody kill[ed] him for nothing: for $500? For $600?"

Khaldi says he knows the victim and frequently shops at the convenience store while cars from his taxi company are getting fixed at a nearby auto shop.  Khaldi says they spoke to each other in Arabic.  Khaldi is from Jerusalem, he says the victim came from Pakistan.

"He likes to talk," he said.  "He jokes and he's a nice guy."

Several business owners on this part of Midlothian Turnpike are from the Middle East and know each other.  Khaldi says he is angry the shooter took a hard working man from his family.

"It's very, very bad," he said.  "If you kill somebody today, you find somebody will kill you tomorrow.  One day somebody kill you."

Customers say the victim has children and a wife, but police are not releasing the name of the victim at this time.

They are also not releasing a suspect description because they say it is still early in the investigation.

If you know anything that could help police, call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
