Design for Excellence builds upon plan already in place

MIDLOTHIAN, VA (WWBT) -

There is a new plan in place for Chesterfield County Public Schools. The school board recently adopted the "Design for Excellence 2020" plan.

Donna Dalton is the chief academic officer for Chesterfield County Public Schools. She and her team have been working together for about two years now, coming up with ways to build upon a plan already in place and make it better.

They came up with Design for Excellence 2020. It boils down to three goals- academic excellence, 21st century skills and technology, and citizenship and core values. Under these goals, students will be introduced to blended learning.

"Blended learning is really the best of face-to-face teacher instruction with digital content. So, it allows students to learn at their own pace, and allows the teacher to differentiate instruction for a variety of students," said Dalton.

Students are already getting a sample of this through the Edmodo system. It allows them to interact with their teachers, get updates, and even do homework online.

Based on the plan, the school system will really focus on blended learning this school year and next.

Starting in 2014, students will find more project-based courses as well as service learning projects incorporated into their school days.

"Our students will be engaged in rigorous and relevant lessons within the classroom. By rigor, we're talking about more critical thinking in the classroom, and by relevance, we're talking about real-world applications for students," said Dalton.

The Design for Excellence plan is already in effect, especially for teachers. They are currently taking professional development courses on blended classrooms.
