Goochland knocked out King William in last year's state quarterfinals in a defensive battle. The teams met up in the same round again this year, but it was a different type of game.
The Bulldogs blew out Cavaliers Friday night 63-36 to move on to the Division 2 state semifinals.
A Chase Doczi touchdown run gave Goochland a 35-12 lead midway through the second quarter, and it seemed like the game was over there. But as time expired in the first half, Freeman McPhearson, KW's do-it-all player, caught a touchdown pass to make it 35-18.
To start the second half, McPhearson took his usual spot under center, and ran in a score to close the gap to 11.
That would be as close as King William would get. Mitchell Brice and Nathan Maddox added touchdown runs to put the Bulldogs up 25, and ended it there.
Goochland racked up 490 yards on the ground.
Last year Goochland slipped by KW 16-12.
The Dogs are one step away from making it back to their second straight state championship game. They'll play at Wilson Memorial next week.
