Christmas light drive-thru opens in Tyler

Frosty, Rudolph and friends are all lit up and ready for an East Texas Christmas.

"For us this is like the beginning of Christmas, it's when everything gets started," says Amy Bass, owner of the Up in Lights Christmas drive-thru in Tyler.

Friday was opening day for the drive-thru and the people who came to visit were ready to put their holiday cheer in full gear.

"It's kind of become a tradition to start Christmas. We got our Christmas decorations out of the attic today and we've been decorating all afternoon and then we just top it off by coming out here and seeing the lights," says Tony Vining, a visitor on Friday.

"The day after Thanksgiving is usually what you would call, well, the day after Thanksgiving, so you would say it's Christmas!" says Sydney Bass, the owner's daughter.

The Bass family has been putting a light show on their land for the last eight years. Their drive-thru is located off of Old Noonday Road near the intersection of Grande and Old Jacksonville Highway in Tyler. They say work on their winter wonderland starts in the Summer.

"We have to have people come cut down trees because of the dryness here and we just kind of steadily work and our friends come out and help and anybody that's willing," says Amy Bass.

The drive-thru is about a mile long and there are more than a million lights on display, all of them owned by the Bass family.

"We just thought, you know what, we have the land and we have the opportunity so we just decided to give it a shot," says Amy Bass.

Some of the favorites on display this year are the iconic dinosaur, Sponge Bob and Frosty the Snowman.

The Bass family says they just hope to help people make happy holiday memories.

It costs $15 per car or truck to see the lights. If you bring a canned good to donate to PATH you will get a $3 discount.

PATH told the Bass family they need canned corn and boxed macaroni and cheese.
