ABC stores pour out the Black Friday deals

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Virginia's ABC stores are pouring out some heavy Black Friday deals.

After an experimental cocktail of discounts during last year's Black Friday, the Commonwealth decided to add even more deals to this year's mix.

"I'm buying to get into the spirit, because the more I sip, the more I get into the spirit," joked Virginia ABC store shopper Marvin Kelley, as he browsed the isles for his holiday party drink list.

Virginia ABC liquor stores will offer 25 - 50 percent discounts on many close-out items, or bottles which won't be restocked. Display tables are already packed with discount items.

Virginia ABC spokeswoman Carol Mawyer says the demand for drink discounts is heavy. Virginia ABC's first Black Friday, last year, brought in nearly $400,000 more in liquor sales than the year before, when no deals were offered. 5,500 more customers also graced the isles of ABC stores last year, compared to previous Black Fridays.

"What happens is customers say, ‘Since I'm saving a little bit of money, I'll move up a shelf and try that product,'" said Mawyer.

Customers who spend $50 or more, will also receive ten percent off. Those who make it to any ABC store early enough, will receive a complementary cocktail recipe booklet.

ABC stores will open at 9 a.m. on Friday, an hour earlier than usual. However, five stores throughout the state will open at 7 a.m. Richmond's Willow Lawn store is one of these extra-early locations.
