Spider football left out of FCS playoffs

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Less than 24 hours after winning a share of the CAA championship, the Richmond Spider football team experienced a different emotion on Sunday, as it was discovered the Spiders will not be part of the FCS playoffs.

Head coach Danny Rocco delivered the news to his team prior to a scheduled 1:30pm selection show watch party.  Athletics director Jim Miller received the news by phone shortly before that time.

Richmond put together an 8-3 record, 6-2 in the CAA, and tied atop the conference in the regular season.  Danny Rocco's losses came to Virginia, Old Dominion and New Hampshire, and the Monarchs and Wildcats both earned berths in the tournament.

The Spiders saw impressive success following a 2011 season in which they finished 3-and-8 with a winless CAA slate.

Richmond is the first team since 1996 with an 8-3 record and 6-2 CAA mark to miss the postseason.
