Yelp can benefit small businesses as a form of local business online marketing.
5StarControl wrote that small business owners not only in Savannah, but around the world will blossom through the proper use of Yelp as an online reputation and marketing tool, highlighted in the recent event hosted by the Savannah Tourism Leadership Council.
The event was hosted by Kathleen McNeill, who is Yelp’s Atlanta Senior Community Manager. Since its San Francisco founding in 2004, Yelp has grown to be used by more than 84 million unique users every month in the United States and 19 other countries. The Yelp website and mobile apps, which account for more than 8 million monthly users, provides a listing of local businesses which users can search for based on reviews and ratings which are written by its community of users. According to McNeill, Yelp tries to maintain a community of users, not just a yellow pages of local businesses. She highlighted the way Yelp can be used to augment a local business’ online reputation, and bring in more customers. Savannah is a city which sits on the Atlantic coast of Georgia, and once served as the former capital of the colony and state of Georgia. With around 130,000 residents, Savannah is the fifth largest city in Georgia, and the county seat of Chatham County. Savannah’s economy is driven by its strategic port, local military bases, and above all tourism. The city draws more than 12 million visitors every year to its picturesque historical downtown area and nearby beaches, and tourists added more than $2 billion to the local economy in 2011.
The Yelp event was part of the regular November monthly meeting of the Savannah Tourism Leadership Council, which is a non-profit agency dedicated to helping tourism-related businesses in Savannah prosper. Begun in 1997, the TLC currently has more than 220 local businesses as members, ranging from hotels and restaurants to banks and law firms, each with some connection to the Savannah Tourism industry. In addition to promoting Savannah as a tourist destination, the TLC aims to provide its membership with access to resources and information which can help them grow their businesses and appeal to a wider variety of tourists.
The recent Savannah event is an indicator of how important Yelp has become for local businesses, and the efforts the company is making to create a community of users and businesses who can all benefit from the use of Yelp. 5StarControl applauds this event and other like it in which Yelp seeks to inform business owners about the importance of online reputation, and present them with strategies to use Yelp properly and for their own advantage.
