ROCK HILL, SC (WWBT) - After Tuesday's loss to Wichita State, Shaka Smart said he hoped it served as a reminder to his team that they had to play hard every night in order to win, no matter who or where they were playing. If Saturday afternoon is any indication, the Rams appear to have gotten the message.
Five Rams scored in double figures and VCU shot 54 percent from the floor, downing Winthrop, 90-54, in its first road game of the season. The Rams held a 48-26 lead at halftime, and it marks the first time in 42 games that the team scored at least 90 points.
Juvonte Reddic led the way with a team high 17 points, while Treveon Graham and Briante Weber added 14 each. The 14 points for Weber marks a career high. Melvin Johnson scored 12 points and Troy Daniels rounded out the Rams in double figures with eleven points. Darius Theus had seven assists.
Havoc made its way to Winthrop, as VCU forced 21 turnovers on the afternoon.
VCU returns to action on Thursday, as the Rams open play in the Bahamas at the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament against 17th-ranked Memphis.
