For the fourth straight season, Blessed Sacrament Huguenot can hoist the state championship trophy. The Knights topped Broadwater Academy on Saturday afternoon, 17-14, to claim the VISAA Division IV state title.
Blessed Sacrament fell into a 14-0 hole, but rattled off 17 consecutive points and played brick-wall defense to earn its fourth straight crown. Knights quarterback Stephen Bendele had two touchdown passes, both to Sam Drewicz, one of which was good for 75 yards. Justin Cary's 42-yard field goal turned out to be the game winner.
The victory was special for the entire team, but perhaps more so for head coach Brice Fritts, who captured the state title in his first season with the team. The previous three were won under the guidance of Mike Henderson, who left to take the Douglas Freeman head coaching job in the off-season.
