Seasonal affective disorder

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - The sun is going down earlier and earlier and it is dark longer while we are awake.

Dr. Judith McKenzie is making her patients aware of the seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Symptoms include feeling depressed, lacking motivation, fatigue, oversleeping, anxiety and weight gain.

There is no proven prevention of SAD, but trials are ongoing using medication to prevent it.

SAD is treated with light exposure using sunlight or a light box, medication and/or counseling.
