8-year-old Dinwiddie student starts toy drive for sick kids

DINWIDDIE, VA (WWBT) -

An eight-year-old boy is doing something quite remarkable to help cheer up sick children.

Nicholas Booth started "Nick's Toy Drive." The third grader, who attends Sutherland Elementary School in Dinwiddie County, is trying to collect hundreds of toys that'll be given to kids in area hospitals on Christmas Day.

After seeing a commercial about sick children spending the holidays in the hospital, Nicholas started the toy drive.

"It makes me feel good," said Nicholas.

He got permission to set up drop-off boxes at his school, as well as in several area churches and businesses. Donated items will benefit local hospitalized children.

"It will cheer them up and they could be surprised on Christmas day," Nicholas added.

A few days into the drive, boxes are nearly full.

"I get so emotional about it because I can't believe all of the support he's gotten - it's been amazing," said Nicholas' mother, Sheri Booth.

The pastor at Nicholas' church was the first to jump onboard.

"He's got a little missionary heart, and he just loves people, and he wants to make sure everyone is as happy as he is," said Pastor Pamela Seeley.

The principal at Nicholas' schools, Becky Baskerville, says "Nick's Toy Drive" sends a positive message to all students.

"We're all in this together. We have to help each other," said Baskerville.

Nicholas says every kid should be happy Christmas morning. He's hoping this toy drive will help.

"I want this to keep going. I want to do it every year," Nicholas explained.

For more information about "Nick's Toy Drive," call 804 919-0406. Donations will be accepted until December 14.
