Richmond Police have no leads 3 months after Southwood murder

Three months after a Richmond man was gunned down just steps from his own front door, police still have no leads.

Detectives have handed out more than 400 fliers with both English and Spanish information, but they've only received one call so far. That person said he was afraid he'd be deported. He left a fake name and fake address and left police back at square one.

The few people Det. David Burt has been able to talk to through a translator describe Lorenzo Milian like many of the Hispanic residents in Southwood.

"People tell me that he would get up each day and go directly up there by the Q-Mart and wait for what they call day labor jobs," Burt explained.

Things went bad on the night of August 13. Police have learned Milian was hanging out next to the store when he was approached by two men.

"There was supposedly some words exchanged," Burt said. "It's unknown exactly what those words were but shortly after the words were exchanged my victim took off running."

Milian made it just steps from the front door of the apartment, where he lived with his family. He was found with one fatal gunshot wound to the head.

There are surveillance cameras at the store and from the City, but they don't capture where the original confrontation happened. Burt says if the lenses moved just a couple inches, he would have seen everything.

That's why Det. Burt needs witnesses to come forward, but he says he can't seem to convince to do that because they're afraid they'll be deported.

"If they're illegal and don't have the proper paperwork, I'm not over there trying to examine that information," Burt maintained. "My job is to work homicides in the City of Richmond."

Police are emphasizing any tips that come into Crime Stoppers can be anonymous. They do have Spanish translators on hand to get the information. Call 780-1000.
