Powhatan pushes to find pit bulls permanent homes

POWHATAN, VA (WWBT) -

It's been two years since a local animal shelter has put down a dog, but that will change if two pit bulls aren't adopted soon.

Powhatan County Animal Control is desperately seeking homes for two dogs.  Eight-year-old Lexi and one-year-old Aiden are pit bull American terriers.

Both ended up at the Powhatan County Animal Shelter and have been there for at least four months, longer than any other animal at the shelter by far.

"I think Lexi's issue is that she's an older dog. Aiden is high-energy. These dogs are healthy. They're great animals and they deserve a home," said Sgt. Christine Boczar with Animal Control.

If a home isn't found by early December the two pit bulls will be put down. something the animal shelter hasn't done in years.

"It's because of a space issue. We are full and when that happens, then you start to think who's been here the longest. We gotta get them out," Boczar explained.

She says keeping any dog in a shelter for several months at a time is not good for the animal.

"They start doing things like getting hot spots, walking in circles in their cages, they get a little depressed. So, it's not good for them to be here that length of time," Boczar added.

Aiden was found and turned in by a citizen. Lexi's former owner, who has health issues, surrendered the dog. Animal control is hoping a qualified candidate will step-up and adopt the animals.

"Somebody that has the income to take care of the dogs. We'd like an indoor home for the dogs," said Boczar.
