Richmond council to vote on Redskins deal Monday

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Richmond City Council will vote Monday night on plans to build the Washington Redskins training camp on Leigh Street.

The goals is to have the Redskins training camp in Richmond by next summer, but not everyone agrees with the plans.

Richmond City Council members will vote on two measures concerning the progress of the project. One measure will alter the city's bond ordinance to allow a city loan to begin funding the facility. City officials have said the loan will be paid by Bon Secours Health System and other business partnerships.

Bon Secours is the biggest financial supporter. The deal gives them naming rights, and a lease on the former Westhampton School property. Westhampton is now vacant, and sits on Libbie and Patterson avenues. Neighbors have expressed concerns saying they were not kept in the loop on the deal.

Another resolution up for a vote will express support for Mayor Jones' plan and economic strategy around building this training camp facility.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. in City Council chambers. Some council members say they have not been briefed on the details surrounding the project.
