Major road construction scheduled to begin

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A major construction project is set to start in Richmond Monday.

Crews will begin much needed road improvements in the Northside and parts of the Fan. The paving will be a bit of a hassle for drivers, but neighbors say they want things fixed and they don't mind the temporary inconvenience.

Neighbors agree Brook Road is busy. Cars have worn this road down, creating cracks, potholes and signs of necessary improvements.

"The bumps, potholes, wavy-road – absolutely," said neighbor Blake Wiseman.

Wiseman is glad the city is putting the pedal to the medal to fix the problem, and there's only one way to do it, according to the mayor. Crews will repave several roads in North Richmond and the Fan. They include: Grove and Hanover to Park Avenue and Floyd to Cherry Street- all starting at the Boulevard heading east. Monday, crews will begin the first project on a stretch of Brook Road.

Starting Monday you want to allow yourself more time when you're driving down Brook Road from Lombardy Street to Brookland Park Boulevard. Neighbors say the short term delay is worth the long term benefit.

This is part of the Mayor's $1.4 million infrastructure effort to repave a quarter of neighborhood streets over a five year period. The initiative started in 2010.

"I think it's a good idea and a good use of the city's money," said Wiseman. "It's something you can see improvements on. For me personally, I'm 100% behind doing something like that."

"I think that's a great use of taxpayer money to correct infrastructure and roads," said neighbor David Spangenthal.

Lanes or streets could be closed temporarily while crews work, causing a lot of brake lights and possible delays.

The paving in North Richmond will begin tomorrow, and next week for streets in the Fan. The project is scheduled to wrap up by mid-December weather permitting.
