Parking restrictions for Richmond marathon enforced Friday

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

It is that time of year for the annual Anthem Richmond Marathon, but this year, things will be a little different.

This year's event is expected to be bigger than ever. That means you will need to plan your commute accordingly.

You can expect quite a few road closures, including the Huguenot Bridge. Come 4 a.m. Saturday, it will close to all traffic. It's one of many roads throughout Richmond that will be off limits as the marathon heads into town.

6,500 runners are expected to hit the pavement in Richmond. That's an increase over last year, especially due to the cancellation of the New York marathon scheduled before Sandy hit.

As of Friday morning, organizers say Richmond's Half Marathon is sold out. While there are still openings in the full marathon and the 8K, the event could bring the biggest crowds in the event's 35 year history.

That's why officers are asking all drivers to be on the lookout for runners parking, restrictions, and of course street closings.

Beginning at midnight, crews will begin towing cars that are parked in the wrong areas. Some of the road closings actually begin this afternoon.

So if you see signs saying marathon parking only, be sure to follow them as Richmond Police advise there will be enforcement.
