The new Kroger at the site of the old Cloverleaf Mall in Chesterfield is set to open in early December.
NBC12 is getting a better idea of the other shops set to open around the area as well. The hope is this will bring much needed revitalization to this part of Chesterfield County.
The transformation of Cloverleaf into Stonebridge is now a reality. Leading the way, the largest Kroger grocery store on the Mid-Atlantic will open its doors very soon. This means shoppers like Toni Davis will cut her commute to go grocery shopping in half.
"It's not an inconvenience but it is a little ways out," she said. "And this just brings it a little closer to home."
The store is a $17-million investment, according to Chesterfield County's committee of Economic Development. It has been working on the project for the past year. Director Will Davis says the wait is worth it.
"It's going to be the anchor for the corner," he said.
Adding to the revitalization efforts, Davis says there are plans to bring in other big chains including Panera Bread and family style restaurants. That means more jobs and lots of customers.
"That intersection of Midlothian/Route 60 and Chippenham is probably one of the most accessible intersections in the entire region. You can be anywhere in 15 minutes," Will Davis said.
Eventually, developers hope to build apartments as well.
As the buildings go up, some people say it's bringing this part of town back to life.
"The mall has must been sitting there and just having some new businesses open will be great," says Toni Davis.
The county's economic development committee also says near-by Beaufont Mall Shopping Center could also seeing new businesses in the near future.
