Spider KA okay with not starting

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Chris Mooney believes that Kendall Anthony is one of the best guards in the Atlantic 10.  He also believes that Anthony is best served not starting for his Spiders.

For the second year, K-A will once again start games on the bench.  The 5-7ish guard was second on the team in scoring last year, pouring in 13 points per game, and won the A-10 Freshman of the Year Award.

But he has upperclassmen Cedric Lindsay and Darien Brothers ahead of him on the depth chart, and those two will be the starting front court.  Mooney says UR will play three guards at a time a lot, but he does not want to start games that way.

But Mooney also says that he doesn't want Anthony to believe that he is "just a spark off the bench".  He knows he needs K-A to be one of the best players on his team if the Spiders are going to make a trip back to the Big Dance.

Anthony says he's not bothered by starting the games on the bench, and enjoys having the opportunity to get a feel of the game by watching it, rather than being thrown into the fire right away.

The starting frontcourt will be seniors Derrick Williams and Greg Robbins, plus redshirt freshman Alonzo Nelson-Ododa.

The Spiders open the season Friday at home against Liberty.
