Man recovering after group attack on Broad Street

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A man is recovering after Richmond Police say he was attacked by a group of juveniles. It happened Monday around 10 p.m. in the 300 block of West Broad Street, a few blocks from the VCU dorms.

Some business owners heard about the crime for the first time on Wednesday.

That part of West Broad Street is pretty busy during the day, especially on First Fridays, but when this assault happened, most of the businesses were closed.

Right now Police say they are looking for a group of people who beat up a 51-year-old man in the heart of Richmond's Arts District. Police say the suspects are all under 18-years old and the reason for the attack is not clear. Officers tell us the victim is now recovering from a broken nose and facial fractures.

"You would have to wonder what would be the reason to beat up a 50-something year old man," said Nathaniel Scott, a barber who has worked at Talk of the Town. "I have no idea."

The crime happened within walking distance of the VCU campus where only three months ago officers arrested three people in connection to a mob attack. In that case, two people were targeted. Two brothers and a 17-year-old were arrested in that case.

Last month, 24-year-old Nathan Ratigan was shot and killed in the 300 block of West Marshall Street, around the corner from this latest attack.

Officers say right now these crimes are all separate cases. While those investigations continue, people who work here maintain it's still a good place to open up shop.

"Pretty good because you have a lot of people coming from VCU, you got a lot of business around here," Scott said.

Police say at least one of the juveniles involved has been arrested and this is an ongoing investigation. Police have not released a description for the other juvenile suspects.

If you know anything you can call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
