Dave Kaechele still gets a kick out the fact that come September, children will attend a school named after him in a district he has represented now for nearly 33 years.
"When I heard about it, I was totally surprised and really honored by their decision," said Kaechele.
However, many say it shouldn't have come as a surprise.
Kaechele has a long resume filled with community service.
He moved to Virginia from Michigan back in the 1960s to work as an engineer at Reynolds Metals Company, and he did what he could to help his community.
It wasn't until 1979 that he took that "help" to a new level. He ran for a spot on the county Board of Supervisors to represent the Three Chopt district.
"I had been involved with the Henrico Republican Committee and was chairman at the time and I didn't have any real aspirations to run for office but some people suggested that I might give it a try, and it happened," said Kaechele.
It certainly did. Since then, he has served on at least 10 boards and committees, including the National Association of Counties, the Richmond Air Quality Committee, and the Capital Area Training Consortium. Kaechele served as chairman of all of these organizations at certain times over the years. He is still a member of the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission.
Kaechele says service has always been important to him.
"I'm an engineer, and I like to try to solve problems and there are plenty of them," said Kaechele.
He hopes the students who attend this school named in his honor will one day step up to help solve community problems as well.
The next big step is to figure out which students will attend this school.
Redistricting is a major issue in Henrico County right now.
The Henrico County School Board will hold a public hearing from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 6, in the auditorium at Hermitage High School. The public is invited to attend and provide feedback on redistricting plans. Community members are encouraged to sign up to speak in advance of the public hearing. To sign up, call the clerk of the school board at 652-3808.
