NBC News projects President Barack Obama has been re-elected for a second-term.
NBC News projected Obama won Ohio to capture the needed 270 electoral votes. The announcement came with Virginia, and several other states, still too close to call.
Romney led in the popular vote by two to three percent throughout the night, but fell behind in the electoral math as key states fell in favor of the incumbent president.
NBC News was able to project Romney as the winner in Arizona, Idaho, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, West Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana.
NBC News also projected Obama as the winner in Minnesota, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, New Jersey, Michigan, New York, Vermont, Maine, the District of Columbia, Delaware, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maryland and Illinois.
Colorado and Florida were also projected too close to call. Nevada was also too early to call, though Obama holds a slight lead.
NBC12 will update this story throughout the night with the latest election returns.
