Bicyclist killed on Mechanicsville Turnpike

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Richmond Police are investigating an incident in which a bicyclist was killed Thursday afternoon.

62-year-old Luther M. Jefferson was riding southbound on Mechanicsville Turnpike when he and a box truck collided near the I-64 off ramp. This happened around 3:00 p.m. Thursday.

Jefferson was transported to VCU Medical Center where he died several hours later. The Medical Examiner will determine the exact cause of death.

Police is still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Crash Analysis and Reconstruction Team has completed its work at the scene but investigators have several more eyewitness interviews to conduct before they consult with the Commonwealth Attorney's Office regarding possible charges.

The driver of the box truck was uninjured. He will not be identified unless charges are filed.
