Driver dies after car crashes into home

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Right now, police are working into the night, trying to figure out what caused a horrific, deadly crash in Richmond.

Neighbors watched in fear as crews worked to remove a Buick that was pinned on its side, up against a home.

"I was afraid whoever was in there was going to die," said Sonya McGowan.

McGowan and her Fiance Ronnie say they were driving down Hopkins Road around 11:30 a.m. when the driver of a Buick sped past them, nearly hitting their car.

He swerved to miss the couple and another car before losing control, crossing several lanes, and striking a parked car across the street.

"It was more stunning," I was hoping it was going to end," said Ronnie Massenburg. "When he hit the first car, I thought he'd stop but he kept going."

The car overturned and smashed into a home next door, crumbling the brick wall of a home. Sonya and Ronnie rushed over immediately to help.

"We were yelling at him to get him to respond to us but he wouldn't," said McGowan.

Police say the man in his late 20's died at the scene. He was the only person inside.

After a wrecker service was able to get the car upright. The damage to the car was even more sobering.

"It looked like somebody just took paper and crumbled it," said Robert Fleischman.

Neighbors rushed over to look at the damage to the house. Tire tracks leading up to the side of the home show where the car rolled over and left a gaping hole in the wall.

Police say no one was inside the home, and no one else was injured in the accident.

Officers don't believe drinking is involved, but do say speed may have played a factor.

We should know more once the crash team has finished investigating.
