Politifact Virginia: Big claims in the U.S. Senate race - NBC12.com - Richmond, VA News

In the race for U.S. Senate, both sides are making some big claims about the work they have done in their previous jobs.

Take, for instance, this claim by Tim Kaine in one of the many ads currently running on TV:

"As governor, I cut $5 billion in spending," said Kaine.

According to the reporters at Politifact Virginia, that claim is mostly true.

Kaine did cut quite a bit. Some of those cuts came after he left office, but he had recommended them. According to Politifact reporter Sean Gorman, in total they come very close to five billion.
