The Richmond Metropolitan Authority announces the Richmond Flying Squirrels have agreed to extend their lease agreement at The Diamond.
The new agreement keeps the team through the 2015 season with options to extend through the 2016 and 2017 seasons. The original lease agreement was through the 2014 season.
A lighting upgrade at the stadium prompted the new deal. RMA along with Henrico and Chesterfield counties and the City of Richmond will fund the new field lighting. The current lights are original to the stadium and do not meet current lighting guidelines for Minor League Baseball.
The new lighting system is expected to cost $300,000 and it will be installed before the 2013 season.
"Although the Squirrels have not lost sight that a new facility is needed for the long term viability of professional baseball in Richmond, we both realize the importance of creating the highest caliber conditions possible for the World Champion San Francisco Giants and all of our fans in Richmond. We thank the RMA for being pro-active in recognizing our needs," said Flying Squirrels Chief Executive Manager Chuck Domino.
The RMA Board of Directors have to give final approval of the agreement. The next board meeting is November 13.
