Hopewell hosts Dinwiddie as both teams fight for playoff spots

HOPEWELL, VA (WWBT) - Hopewell isn't used to the kind of success its having this year, and the Blue Devils can take it a step further on Friday against Dinwiddie in our On the Sidelines Game of the Week.

Hopewell is 6-2 on the season and has clinched its first winning campaign since 2004, but hopes the winning doesn't stop there.  With a victory against the Generals on Friday night, the Blue Devils would essentially lock up a Division 5 playoff spot, their first since that 2004 season.  Ricky Irby's squad has put together four straight wins and lost its only Central District game to Meadowbrook.  The Devils are currently second in the Division 5 VHSL rankings for the Central Region.

While Hopewell is in unfamiliar territory, Dinwiddie is in anything but that.  The Generals have qualified for the Central Region playoffs in each of the last five seasons, and have enjoyed a six game winning streak against the Blue Devils.  Billy Mills' team is 5-3 on the year and has also won four games in a row.  The Generals are clinging to that fourth and final Central Region playoff spot, and Mills said this week that if they keep winning, they control their own destiny, and that's what he wants his team to focus on.

Kickoff on Friday is set for 7:30pm at Hopewell's Merner Field.
