Child falls into rock quarry in Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE, VA (WWBT) -

Police and rescue crews are searching for a young child in Prince George County who fell into a rock quarry.

It's located at Vulcan Materials, a sand and gravel company, on Puddledock Road.

The missing child has been identified as 12-year-old Clacy Sullivan, a 6th grader at J.E.J. Moore Middle School.

Police say Sullivan and two other kids were playing around the quarry when he fell into the water. The two other kids could not reach Sullivan so they called police.

The water is about 16 feet deep and around 45 degrees where Sullivan fell into the water.

Police have switched the operation from a rescue to a recovery. Efforts ended around 7 p.m. for the safety of the crews and will resume in the morning.

Police say kids often come from two nearby trailer parks to play in the 35-acre quarry.
