MURFREESBORO, NC (WWBT) - Virginia Union came close to grabbing another CIAA victory and winning its second straight game on Saturday afternoon, but could not lock up a road win, falling at Chowan, 28-21.
The Panthers have now fallen in four of their last five games and see their record fall to 3-4, 1-3 in conference play.
After a scoreless first quarter, Chowan was the first to score and took a 7-0 lead with 6:36 remaining in the first half. The Hawks would add another touchdown with 2:13 remaining in the second quarter. Virginia Union, however, would return the ensuing kickoff for a score of its own, and trailed 14-7 at the half.
The Panthers opened up the third quarter by tying the game up at 14, but would find itself in a two-touchdown hole by the fourth, trailing 28-14 after an interception led to a score for the Hawks. With a little more than a minute to play, the Panthers scored again, cutting the deficit to just one score, but it was too little too late.
Virginia Union will return to Richmond next Saturday as the Panthers host Bowie State at Hovey Field.
