A motorcyclist is in critical, but stable condition after Richmond police say he flipped his bike on a roundabout early Saturday morning, near Virginia Union University. The man in his sixties collided with the island in the middle of Lombardy and Admiral Streets just before 4 a.m.
People who live near the intersection aren't surprised at the news. They say the roundabout is simply a dangerous place to drive or walk.
Robert Kilichowski lives down the road and heard the crash. He says the road is notorious for speeding.
"This area over here is dangerous for anybody, whether you're a biker, a pedestrian, or even driving in a vehicle by itself," said Kilichowski.
Police haven't revealed what caused the biker to lose control or whether speeding or alcohol are factors.
There are no traffic lights or crosswalk signals. Jimmy Gholson, who walks by the roundabout weekly, says both additions would make it safer.
"This street is busy," said Gholson. "You must always look around because if you don't, you'll get hit."
