NBC12 VIEWPOINT: The Debates: Only in America

By: Kym Grinnage email

For the next few weeks, until the week after Election Day, my commentaries will focus on the elections. I know you feel that you have heard enough, but hear me out. Last week nearly 70 million people across the country watched some part of the presidential debate and based on the ratings in Central Virginia, you did your fair share of viewing. That number represents the largest single viewership of a debate since the Reagan/Carter debate. So what does that mean? It means that you and your fellow Virginians are engaged in the process. Now I know that some in the audience might not like what I am going to say, but all of the major surveys around the country scored Romney as the overwhelming winner. But here is the good news, I heard very civil dialogue the next day. And it included all of the things you would expect to hear: who won and why, who seemed to be in command and what will happen in the next debate.

I will admit that 70 million people watching television for a debate warms my heart, but it was the post debate dialogue among "the people" that I found most compelling. So what's next? By now you probably have a strong opinion about who won the Biden/Ryan debate and I hope you talk about it. Debates provide an excellent opportunity for you to hear for yourself, directly from the candidate where they stand on the issues. There are many debates to go and two very important presidential debates. I know I can count on you to watch, evaluate and discuss.
