The C.F. Sauer company is celebrating 125 years in operation in Richmond.
The company was founded in the River City on October 13, 1887 at the corner of 17th and Broad streets. Conrad Frederick Sauer, a pharmacist, started the company on his 21st birthday after noticing a lot of patrons buying flavoring extracts. At the time, it was the first company in the country to provide pure flavoring extracts in five and 10 gram cartoned bottles. The cost just 15 and 25 cents, respectively.
The business moved to 2000 West Broad Street in 1911, where it still stands more than 100 years later. By 1927 it was the nation's largest producer of extracts and spices. C.F. Sauer IV was elected president of the company in 1993. 125 years after its inception, the company remains in the same family's hands.
