Scooters, mopeds targeted by thieves in Chesterfield

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

Scooter and moped riders, beware. Police say your wheels might be a hot item for criminals.

Chesterfield officers report a recent increase in scooter and moped thefts. They say many of the stolen two-wheelers have been outside and unsecured.

Police believe the mopeds and scooters are easy targets because they're not that heavy and they are often easily accessible.

"That's what we're theorizing. That maybe people are stealing it and selling it. That's why it's important, when people buy their mopeds or scooters, that they report the VIN numbers," said George Burgess, who investigates stolen property for Chesterfield Police.

Police say you need to have the Vehicle Identification Number written down somewhere safe,  since scooters aren't always registered, and that may be your best hope of getting it back.

They advise always lock it up or take it inside to avoid being a target in the first place.
