VCU Police Chief explains coordination

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

One day after Virginia Commonwealth University's president sent out an urgent safety message, University and Richmond Police are meeting to make a game plan.

The two departments sat down early Wednesday morning. Then, Richmond Police needed to examine what kind of resources it is going to be able to dedicate to the area so they can be more effective in the coordinated approach.

The logistics of the six recent incidents on and around the VCU campus may be confusing. Three occurred outside VCU Police jurisdiction and those officers are investigating the other three. They're not far from each other and could be related.

"Obviously, with both agencies there's a limited amount of resources and we want to be sure that we're coordinating those resources to accomplish as much as possible," VCU Police Chief John Venuti said.

VCU Police is the largest university police department in the commonwealth. Still, it needs that collaboration, especially when the campus sees crime it doesn't deal with on a regular basis.

"We rely on Richmond for a lot of computer forensics," Venuti added. "We rely on Richmond any time there's a situation if it involves forensics and processing of evidence, we don't have that technology here."

The 92 sworn VCU cops have the same authority and obligation to exercise police power as other city and state officers.

VCU will hold a university safety town hall meeting Thursday night from 8:30 to 10 p.m. in the Harris Hall auditorium on Floyd Avenue. President Michael Rao will be there, along with representatives from VCUPD, student affairs and school administration.
