Police identify pedestrian killed in Chesterfield

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

Chesterfield police have identified the victim of the county's first pedestrian fatality of the year.

Billy C. Edwards, 58, of Chesterfield Count was killed late Thursday night while crossing Jefferson Davis Highway, according to police.

Edwards was crossing the road in the 9700 block of Jefferson Davis, near a 7-11 convenience store around 10:40pm. He was struck and killed by a vehicle traveling south, according to Chesterfield police.

Residents and employees in the area say that the stretch of road sees plenty of foot traffic. Even though one must cross four lanes of traffic while cars are traveling at high speeds.

"I cross the road every day," said resident Justin Burkhardt. He lives in one of the two mobile home parks that sit on either side of Jefferson Davis where the man was killed.

Burkhardt said that people often walk along or cross Jefferson Davis but at night, the road is very dark, even with street lights overhead.

"It would make it difficult for a driver to see you," Burkhardt said.

Not much is known about the victim, but police say alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash. No one's been charged at this time.
