You may not think about if the meat you're eating in a restaurant has been cooked to the proper temperature to make sure it's safe, but the State Health Department does in order to protect you.
Undercooked meat was the problem at Excel Chinese Restaurant at 15710 Jefferson Davis Highway in Chesterfield, which had 4 critical violations. One of them, according to the inspection report, was that the chicken in the moo goo gai pan was not cooked to a sufficient temperature and time to eliminate pathogenic bacteria. The report says the chicken was re-cooked to the proper temperature and other violations were corrected during the inspection.
In Henrico, the China King Chinese Restaurant at 4362 South Laburnum Avenue had 4 critical violations and a problem with disclosure. The inspector wrote that the menu should disclose that imitation scallops are served and crab Rangoon has no crab, only cheese, and that they should be truthful with customers. The report shows that violations were corrected during the inspection.
But there have been no problems like that at Ciao Pizza at 1592 Mountain Road in Henrico. This pizzeria wins the NBC 12 Hall of Fame Award for earning perfect scores on four inspections and not having a single critical violation in more than a year.
