DC sniper expresses deepest remorse 10 years later

A decade after the DC sniper attack gripped the nation, the young man involved is expressing his deepest regret and guilt.

In an interview with the Washington Post, Lee Boyd Malvo sent a message to the victims and the families he targeted for no apparent reason.

Malvo expressed his deepest remorse, calling himself a monster who stole innocent lives, and saying he has no excuse for his senseless acts. He said he was brainwashed and manipulated by the mastermind behind the DC slayings, John Allen Muhammad.

The 27-year-old reflected on the day he shot an innocent woman at a Virginia Home Depot, reliving living the devastation and sadness he saw in her husband's eyes.

"They are penetrating," Malvo said to a reporter from prison in Virginia. "It is the worst sort of pain I have ever seen in my life. Words do not possess the depth in which to fully convey that emotion and what I felt when I saw it. You feel like the worst piece of scum on the planet."

Malvo, along with John Allen Muhammad, attacked 13 strangers, killing 10 in the Washington DC area and parts of Virginia.

News of the shooting shocked many neighbors here in Ashland. A Florida couple stopped by a Ponderosa off I-95 while on a road trip. The husband was shot in the stomach. After multiple surgeries, he survived. Jeffery Hopper was one of three victims who lived to tell his story.

Malvo said he's worked hard to recover from the hands of a sinister and evil man, saying the person he trusted since he was a young teen turned him into a "killing machine."

"I was a monster. If you look up the definition, that's what a monster is. I was a ghoul. I was a thief. I stole people's lives," Malvo said. "I did someone else's bidding just because they said so. There is no rhyme or reason or sense."

In the interviews, Malvo also expressed his remorse for the victims and their families. He said not to allow him to haunt them the rest of their lives.

Malvo is spending the rest of his life in prison. The other shooter, John Allen Muhammad, was executed in 2009.
