Henrico police arrest suspect in Lakeside homicide

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

Henrico Police have arrested a man in connection with a Sunday homicide in Lakeside.

Michael Jeter Mabry, Jr., 24, of Henrico is charged with second degree murder in the shooting death of Donald M. Sims, Sr., 62, near Sims' home in the 3000 block of Kenwood Avenue.

Detectives learned that Sims had an argument with Mabry, which escalated and resulted in the shooting. While police did not elaborate on the nature of the argument, multiple witnesses told NBC12 the pair argued over loud dirt bikes in the neighborhood.

Police came to the Lakeside home after receiving a call at 6:30 p.m. Sunday for a shooting. When officers arrived on scene, they found Sims shot and lying on the ground.

John Chisholm, who was eating dinner at the time, said he performed CPR on the victim.

"At that time, I'm over top of the body and the young girl living [across the street] takes her shirt off and starts packing the wound immediately," Chisholm said Monday.

Sims was taken to VCU Medical Center, where he later died.

"I mean, really, it was about the most senseless murder I've seen in a while," Chisholm said.

A charge of second degree murder means police believe the crime was not pre-meditated. It carries a potential punishment of 5-40 years in prison upon conviction.

Mabry was ordered held without bond.
