Armed robbery in the Museum District

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Police are looking for two armed robbers who mugged a man outside his home in the Museum District.

This happened near the corner of North Colonial Avenue and Monument around 9 p.m. Monday.

A man had just parked his car and was walking to his front door when two men approached, put what felt like a gun to his back and stole his wallet.

Karissa Griffin has lived on this same block for nearly two years. This incident hits way too close to home for her.

"It's unheard of," Griffin said. "I would have never, never expected that. I was doing laundry, but inside the building thank goodness."

She says muggings are a risk in any city, but the Museum District isn't the part of town where she expects something like this to happen.

"I had no idea," she said. "I know things happen in the city but I never kind of expected that to happen here."

Police say the investigation just started so it's too soon to say whether or not these two may have been involved in other robberies as well.

For now, police only have a vague description of the robbers. Investigators say it's likely the victim was more concerned with escaping with his life than getting a good look at the people robbing him.

His neighbors in the Museum District say this is a reminder that crime can happen anywhere.

"I'll probably still carry my pepper spray," Griffin said. "I'll probably still be cautious, be on the lookout. That's kind of how I was brought up, to be aware of my surroundings."

If you have any information that can help police - you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000. As always, your tip will remain anonymous.
