Virginia War Memorial's American flag stolen overnight

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The flag on display outside of the Virginia War Memorial was missing Sunday morning. Thieves made off with the flag overnight, sometime between 3:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m.

A war memorial spokesperson tells NBC12 the rope that attached the flag to the pole was cut, and since the flag itself is very large, investigators are operating under the belief multiple crooks were involved.

Jeb Hockman, Director of Marketing for the Virginia War Memorial, said this is the first time anyone has attempted to steal the flag.

"We consider this hallowed ground. It's a place where most Virginians, especially our veterans, come here to honor those who died and sacrifice their lives, servicemen and women, for our country," said Hockman.  "It's kind of sad that someone would do this."

Hockman said the cost of the flag is roughly $150 and a new one should be in place before the end of the day Sunday.

Right now, investigators are looking over surveillance pictures and trying to identify potential suspects.
