VCU enjoying best fall season start ever

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Who needs football? VCU is having plenty of excitement without it at the start of its fall season.

The four VCU fall sports have their best start ever collectively.  After the women's soccer topped William & Mary Thursday night, the Rams have won 21 straight games.  The two soccer squads, volleyball and field hockey have combined to go 26-3-5 to start the season.  The men's soccer team is undefeated in six games, with nationally ranked UVA coming to town Tuesday.  The field hockey team is a perfect 6-0.  And the volleyball team has its best start ever at 12-1.

At the fans are starting to come out in the fall too.  VCU men's soccer coach Dave Giffard says he's seen more students and more fans come to their games.  He gives partial credit to Shaka Smart and the men's basketball team's Final Four run for invigorating the fan base.

But it's what's happening on the field and in the gym that is turning the most heads - with new VCU athletic director Ed McLaughlin the beneficiary of a great start to his tenure.
