HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Hermitage and Varina are two of the most successful football teams in the Central Region in recent years, and have combined to win nine region titles since 1997. Friday they will clash in our On the Sidelines Game of the Week, with Varina looking to reverse a recent trend of Panther dominance in the series.
The Blue Devils were the cream of the crop in the region, winning six championships between 1997 and 2008, including four in a row. Hermitage came along to win regional crowns in 2007, 2010 and 2011, and has beaten Varina in each of the last three years, leaving Stu Brown's club hungry for a win against this week's foe. The historic success of these two squads, combined with their potential this year, has made this match-up one of the most highly anticipated games of the regular season.
Hermitage enter with a 2-0 record and is coming off a bye week. The Panthers topped Lee-Davis their last time out and have a combined 36-1 record against Central Region teams since the kickoff of the 2009 season. Running back Derrick Green, Quarterback Niko Johnson and a brick-wall defense lead Patrick Kane's club into this contest.
Varina is also 2-0 and topped Thomas Dale, 37-8, its last time out. Quarterback Brandon Wood, along with receivers P.T. Dixon and Donovan Dowling were standouts in that win, while the defense has shown it is one of the best in the area.
Hermitage and Varina kick off at 7:00pm on the Blue Devils' home field on Friday night. Both teams kick off in district play the following week.
